Best Time to Visit Myanmar

General information

You can visit Myanmar any time of year, though there are specific seasons to keep in mind. Broadly speaking, the best time to visit is during the dry season from October to April, as the weather will be good for all types of activities. While November to January are the high season and regarded as the perfect time to visit, it’s also busier, especially at key sites like the temples of Bagan.

The wet season is from May to September. But it’s known by the locals as the Green Season, which has its own advantages:

  • The plants are greener
  • It’s not as hot
  • There’s less dust
  • The days are longer
  • Availability is generally better

So although the downpours are intense, they are short-lived, and you might find Myanmar more relaxing with less other tourists in the Green Season.

Central Myanmar

The peak summer months of April and May are a good time to visit, though keep in mind temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius on the low plains of Bagan, Yangon, and Mandalay. In the highlands, including Kalaw, Pyin Oo Lwin and Lake Inle (which are at an elevation of around 1000m), average temperatures are lower, so you’ll be able to cool off here.

During the rest of the year, temperatures are in a pleasant 25 to 30-degree range throughout Central Myanmar, but keep in mind the rainy season from June to August.

Southern Myanmar

Yangon is a year-round destination, though it does get hottest in the south during March and April. November to April is perfect for a beach escape at Ngapali Beach, though keep in mind that during the wet season of May to September, Ngapali closes down.
