Day 1 – Arrival in Moshi

You’ll start your adventure with a relaxing stay in Moshi, a charming town filled with colorful shops and local restaurants. Surrounded by rolling coffee and tea plantations, it’s the perfect place to unwind and soak up the gentle rhythm of village life. On arrival, you’ll be transferred straight to your lodge to settle in. The rooms are simple, clean, and comfortable, each with a private bathroom, and breakfast is included to fuel your day. After your flight, you can also take a refreshing dip in the swimming pool and relax before the adventure begins.

    Day 2 – Machame Gate – Machame Camp (3000m)

After breakfast, you’ll meet your mountain guide and drive about an hour to the Machame Gate. Here, all formalities and entrance fees are taken care of, and your gear is distributed among the cheerful porters. The climb begins through dense cloud forests, where you can set your own pace. The surroundings feel almost magical, with opportunities to spot tropical birds, monkeys, chameleons, and monitor lizards along the way. After 6–8 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Machame Camp, where the cook will have dinner ready. Afterwards, you can relax and chat with your guide or turn in early to be refreshed for the next day’s climb.

    Day 3 – Machame Camp (3000m) – Shira Camp (3840m)

In the early morning, after a hot cup of coffee and a sandwich, you’ll set off again. The scenery gradually shifts from tropical cloud forest to fragrant heathland, and eventually to rocky terrain dotted with volcanic rocks and cacti. Along the way, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Shira Plateau and the extinct volcano, Mount Meru, while Kilimanjaro’s snowy peak comes into view in the distance. After a picnic lunch, you’ll reach Shira Camp in about 4–5 hours, where you can wash with warm water from a bowl. As the temperature drops in the evening, you’ll crawl into your sleeping bag for a well-earned rest.

    Day 4 – Shira Camp (3840m) – Barranco Camp (3950m)

Today, the effects of the altitude usually start to make themselves felt. To help with this, you’ll trek up to Lava Tower at 4,500 meters, then descend again to sleep much lower, allowing your body to adjust to the thin air. In total, you’ll spend around six hours walking to Barranco Camp, which many consider the most beautiful spot on the climb, nestled in a dramatic gorge. On arrival, the porters will have your tents ready, along with a thermos of hot water or hot chocolate and a savoury snack. Dinner is prepared by the cook and if the skies are clear, you may be treated to a spectacular starry night above the mountains.

    Day 5 – Karanga Camp (3960m) – Barafu Camp (4600m)

After breakfast today, you’ll set off across a surreal, moonscape-like terrain scattered with ice formations. The name Barafu actually means “ice” in Swahili and it’s easy to see why here. The thin air makes every step feel as if you’re walking on a distant planet. From Barafu Camp, you’ll take a break to take in the spectacular panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s dramatic Kibo crater and the rugged peaks of Mawenzi. The sheer scale and beauty of the surrounding mountains make this a truly unforgettable spot to rest before the day ahead. After dinner, you’ll get an early night’s rest, as you’ll be waking shortly after midnight to begin the most exhilarating part of your journey: the final ascent to the summit of Kilimanjaro, where breathtaking sunrise views await.

    Day 6 – Barafu Camp (4600m) – Uhuru peak (5895m)

Just after midnight, when the weather is at its most stable, you’ll set off in the moonlight for the most challenging section of the climb. The air is cold and thin and you’ll need to take breaks regularly to catch your breath as you make your way upward. The final approach to the crater rim is particularly tough, with loose pebbles underfoot. Your effort will be rewarded though at Stella Point, where the sunrise paints the sky in spectacular colours and the glaciers glisten in the early light. Don’t think you’re quite at the top yet though. From Stella Point, it’s about an hour’s walk to the summit at Uhuru Peak, the roof of Africa, standing at 5,895 m. It’s one of those rare and unforgettable experiences that you have to experience first hand to understand.

After a short rest at the summit and a victory photo to mark the achievement, it’s time to begin your descent. While it may sound easier than the climb, the journey down takes almost seven hours in total. Your guide will help set a steady, comfortable pace, ensuring you move safely and avoid any unnecessary strain. Along the way, you’ll stop again at Barafu Camp, where a refreshing glass of “victory lemonade” awaits and the porters congratulate you on your achievement. Take about an hour here to relax and take in your accomplishment. After the break, the descent continues to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters. After an unforgettable day on the roof of Africa, by the time you reach Mweka Camp, you’ll be ready to crawl into your sleeping bag and let your body rest and recover.

    Day 7 – Mweka Camp (3100m) – Moshi hotel

The end of your Kilimanjaro adventure is now in sight. Today is much gentler with the final 2–3 hours leading you back through lush, tropical greenery. The paths can be a little slippery in places, so you’ll take your time and enjoy the surroundings. When you reach Mweka Gate at 1,630 m, you can take another moment to celebrate — you’ve conquered Kilimanjaro! Here, you’ll also receive a certificate to commemorate this incredible achievement. Your driver will then be waiting to take you back to Moshi, where you can relax and recover back at your hotel.

Day 8 – Departure from Moshi

From Moshi, you can continue your adventure with a short safari around Arusha, where you’ll journey through the bush and encounter wildlife in their natural habitat. If you’re tempted by a safari, take a look at our Big Five Safari trip that would work perfectly. Or, if the mountains and savannahs have left you dreaming of beaches, perhaps it’s now time to head to Zanzibar?

    Climbing Kilimanjaro: The Rongai Route

    • Price:
from £ 2,670.- per person (excluding flights)
    • Included:
Accommodation, excursions, transport and meals as described above

If you’re looking for a route less crowded than the others, check out the Rongai route. On this trip, you’ll brave the mountain from the north side, near the border with Kenya. While the scenery is a little less varied than on the Machame route, the sense of peace and unspoilt wilderness more than makes up for it. During the rainy season, this side of the mountain is generally drier, increasing your chances of good trekking conditions.
