Beaches in Tanzania & Kenya

A guide to Tanzania & Kenya's beaches

Tanzania and Kenya, with their long stretch of Indian Ocean coastline, are home to some of East Africa’s most beautiful and unspoiled beaches. From Tanzania’s idyllic islands like Zanzibar and quiet mainland shores, to Kenya’s palm-fringed sands in Diani and Lamu, there’s no shortage of stunning spots to unwind after your overland adventure. Sit back with a good book and relax, take a refreshing dip in the warm waters and go beneath the surface to discover the vibrant marine life. Bliss!

Zanzibar beach

Zanzibar

On the northern tip of Zanzibar Island you’ll find Nungwi Beach. Known for its long stretches of powdery white sand, calm turquoise waters, and vibrant coral reefs just off the coast. It’s a great spot for swimming, snorkelling, and diving, and has a lively atmosphere with many resorts, bars, and restaurants to choose from. Further down the island on the southeastern coast Paje Beach is a haven for kite surfers due to its consistent winds and vast stretches of sand. The beach is quieter than Nungwi, making it ideal for those looking to unwind or take part in some adventurous watersports. It is also close to the Jozani Forest, home to the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkeys. Further south, Bwejuu Beach is considered one of the best beaches in Zanzibar for relaxation. It’s a serene, less busy area with shallow waters which are ideal for swimming and young families.

Swahili Coast

The Swahili Coast, a historic and culturally rich region along the east coast, and has been a major hub for trade for over a thousand years. Known for its unique Swahili culture, the region offers a combination of rich tradition and beautiful beaches. Tucked away on the northern end of Tanzania, and a six hour drive from Dar es Salaam, the coastal town of Pangani is the ideal spot for some relaxation. Take a dip in the Indian Ocean, visit nearby Maziwe Island for a spot of snorkelling or simply soak up the sun. When you’re not on the beach, the town is also known for its traditional Swahili architecture.

Diani Beach

Diani Beach is located on Kenya’s south coast, about 40 minutes drive from Mombasa. Fringed by palm trees and lapped by the warm Indian Ocean, it’s known for its long, white sandy beach and crystal-clear water. There’s plenty to do here – from snorkelling the offshore coral reefs to spotting colobus monkeys in the nearby forest. There’s a good mix of small resorts, beach bars and local restaurants, making it a great place to soak up some sunshine at the end of a Kenya holiday.

Best time to visit Tanzania & Kenya's beaches

The best time to visit the beaches of Tanzania and Kenya is during the dry season, which typically runs from June to October. This period offers pleasant temperatures and low rainfall, ideal for sunny beach days. The rainy season from March to May can bring heavy showers, but it’s also a quieter time for travel if you prefer fewer tourists.
