Getting around Tanzania

General information

Getting around Tanzania

Getting around Tanzania is an adventure in itself, with plenty of options depending on where you’re headed. If you’re covering big distances like from Dar es Salaam to Arusha or out to the Serengeti—domestic flights are quick and surprisingly common. While on safari, you will travel in comfortable 4×4 vehicles to spot wildlife and take in the beautiful landscapes. In cities, taxis are easy to find (just agree on the price first), and apps like Bolt work well too. If you’re heading to Zanzibar, ferries run daily from Dar, with Azam Marine being one of the most reliable. And when you’re exploring smaller towns or neighborhoods, hopping on a tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi is a fun (if bumpy) way to go.

Car and driver

For a stress-free experience, we will organise either a 4×4 minivans or Landcruiser and driver for your time in Tanzania. Our drivers know these roads well and have tonnes of experience navigating the sometimes challenging terrain, as well as top tips for local experiences and hidden gems you may otherwise have driven past without knowing.

Luggage is transported partly in the back and partly on the roof so we advise you to travel with a backpack or soft bag instead of a hard suitcase that may be damaged by the bumpy roads.

Domestic flights

Whilst driving across this region is an adventure in itself, some routes can involve long distances. In such cases, or if you are limited by the number of days, you might want to opt for a domestic flight. There are several routes throughout the region and our Travel Specialists can advise you when to utilise them during your trip.
