Bite-sized trip

    Oaxaca

    3 days / 2 nights (flexible)

Oaxaca (pronounced wa-ha-ka) is a city with indigenous and colonial influences, a thriving art scene and a fascinating, spirited history. Staying in a traditional hotel in the UNESCO listed old centre, you’ll find local market stalls and trendy bars all around you, with plenty to keep you entertained. During your stay, you’ll also head up to the ancient site of Monte Alban, a hilltop archaeological site once central to the Zapotec empire, before cycling back down to the city.

Day 1 – Arrival in Oaxaca

When you arrive in the city you’ll make your way to your base for the next couple of nights – a comfy colonial hotel with a central courtyard, conveniently located in the historic old centre of town. Aside from the architecture which earned this place its UNESCO listing, you’ll also find a whole host of cool little bars, restaurants and artisan stores. This is a city with a very distinct personality.

Day 2 – Monte Alban cycling trip

After exploring the charms of the city on you first day, it’s time to head out into the countryside, and to the site of Monte Alban – once the centre of the Zapotec empire. Here you’ll find ruins of their former temples and society, as well as panoramic views of the region. You’ll travel up here by minibus, before heading back down to Oaxaca by mountain bike through the valley, ready for another evening in the city.

Day 3 – Carry on your journey

We can book a little longer for you here if you’d like, otherwise you’ll check out this morning and head to the bus station for the next leg of your Mexican adventure.
