Day 1 – Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre
Today you’ll be picked up by your driver and joined by a few other travellers for a trip to the world famous Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Here you’ll find young orangutans who have been orphaned by deforestation and poachers, and are now preparing for independent adult life in the wild. You’ll visit the massive living space for these orangutans, and as feeding time hits you’ll see the iconic great apes emerge from the jungle to fill their belly with fresh fruit and nuts.
Kinabatangan River cruise
After your time with the orangutans, you’ll head to the port of Sandakan where you’ll leave the mainland for a boat trip down the longest river of Sabah, Kinabatangan. Once you’ve all put on your life-jackets, you’ll hop aboard the boat on the waterfront – look up and you’ll see colourful birds peering endlessly in the water in search for food. After a stop for lunch in a small village, you’ll carry on the journey to your atmospheric lodge in the middle of the jungle. Later this afternoon you’ll watch the animals come to life as the sun goes down on a wildlife cruise. In the evening you’ll head back to your lodge for dinner and fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle.
Day 2 – Wildlife spotting
This morning you’ll be woken by the sounds of monkeys shrieking in the distance and birds flying overhead. You’ll have an early start as you set out on your first cruise of the day where you’ll watch monkeys, lizards, crocodiles and elephants awaken along the waterfront. After your early morning cruise, you’ll sail back to the lodge for a tasty breakfast. The afternoon is free for you to relax at the lodge or take a walk around the area and to some nearby caves, before taking another boat trip later in the day to watch even more wildlife as the sun sets.
Day 3 – Travel back to Sandakan
After breakfast this morning, you’ll travel back to Sandakan by boat on a 2 and a half hour journey. Look high in the trees to see monkeys playing one last time before arriving at Sandakan. Here you’ll visit the local village for lunch and even have time for a short wander before heading to your next destination.
