Kuching is the perfect place to spend a day or two when starting your Sarawak family adventure. This compact, welcoming city is a mix of old and new, a melting pot of cultures and cuisines. It’s also known as ‘Cat City’, and your kids will love spotting the cat statues dotted around the city. There’s even a museum dedicated to them!

Day 1 – Arrival in Kuching

Your driver will be waiting for you at the airport for your short drive to your centrally located hotel. From here, it’s an easy walk to explore the highlights of this charming city. Why not walk along the lively riverfront, cool off in one of the many cafes or take the kids to try a famous Sarawak Laksa for an authentic experience.

Day 2 – Cycling trip & river cruise

This morning you’ll get active on a half-day cycling tour, in a small group accompanied by an English-speaking guide. You’ll pedal past some of Kuching’s most important temples and landmarks, stopping to sample local street food and drinks. Then board a traditional Sampan boat for a short cruise along the Sarawak River. Disembark and continue exploring with your guide, passing through small villages and local open air markets selling tropical fresh fruits and vegetables and local handicrafts. Return to the city centre around midday. The rest of the day is free for you all to explore or rest after your adventurous morning.

This experience is suitable for children of all ages. Child bikes and seats are available

Spot orangutans at Semenggoh

Do your kids love wildlife? Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is the go-to spot near Kuching if you want to see orangutans up close. The centre was set up to care for orangutans that were kept as illegal pets, orphaned, or found injured. Many have been successfully rehabilitated and released into the surrounding forest reserve to fend for themselves. These semi-wild primates swing by the centre twice a day for snacks, and we can arrange a visit at feeding time for maximum, up-close, orangutan spotting potential. Ask your Travel Specialist to include this in your travel plan.

This experience is great for kids of all ages.

Day 3 – Departure from Kuching

It’s sadly time to leave the ‘Cat City’. But there are numerous destinations you can travel onto next. You could head to the Damai peninsula, encompassed by the tropical rainforest and golden beaches. Or spend a night in Bako National Park that’s teaming with wildlife. If you’re looking for a slower paced start to your trip we can easily add another night to your stay in Kuching.
