    Camaguey
  • Duration:
    3 days / 2 nights (flexible)
  • Price:
from £ 75.- per person (excluding flights)
The UNESCO World Heritage site of Camaguey is the heart of the Cuban farming country, where you'll come across local ranchers and soak up lush scenery. Steeped in fascinating pirate history, this is the third largest city on the island and a glance into the working heart of Cuba. With a muddle of streets that will foil even the greatest inner compass, it’s a wonderful place for an aimless wander, with helpful local people and a generous batch of rum-pedalling bodegas to explore. It also makes a useful stopover if you're travelling between the west and east!

Day 1 – Arrival in Camaguey

Arriving in Camaguey, you’ll settle into your comfortable casa particular located in the heart of the city centre. You’ll have your own room and bathroom, as well as your own key so that you can come and go as you please during your stay. Your hosts will prepare breakfast for you in the morning, and will often offer to cook you an evening meal too which you can pay for directly. They’re also your best source of hints and tips on where to visit in order to make the most of your time in the city.

Days 2-3 – Camaguey free time & departure

The best thing to do in Camaguey is get completely lost. Heading for the UNESCO historic district, you’ll find yourself in a cobbled labyrinth that defies all logic. These twisting, double-backing, mind-boggling alleys were originally built to confuse attacking pirates, but today they confound tourists instead!

The cobbled streets are packed with small coloured houses, baroque churches, flower-filled courtyards and peaceful plazas. Here, you can wander without a destination, stopping for coffee (or a mojito) and sitting in the sunshine. The people here are known for being resilient and proud, so you might well find yourself in a bodega getting a local take on the town. After your second night in Camaguey you’ll journey onwards through Cuba.
