Start your Greece journey at the foot of the Acropolis. During the day you admire antiquities, working up an appetite to feast, just like the Greeks, from a table full of mezethes (Greek tapas) in a traditional taverna. You will sleep centrally in the lively and hip Psiri district, which is away from the crowds and among the Athenians. It is a mecca for lovers of street art and vintage shops and the ideal base for your Athens adventure.

Arrival in Athens

While many travelers stay in the cozy but touristic Plaka, we opt for the less busy, hip Psiri district where the Athenians also like to come. You sleep in a trendy hotel but are still within walking distance of Plaka and Monastiraki. You wouldn’t know it now, but this originally working-class neighborhood used to be the slum of Athens, it’s changed a lot and is now full of street art, old craft shops, vintage shops, atmospheric restaurants and trendy bars.

streets of Athens full of people

In the evening there is a cozy and friendly atmosphere on the terraces and along the souvenir shops. The nice thing about Athens city center is that you meet both tourists and local Greeks as you get lost in its maze of narrow, cozy streets on your way to one of its many outdoor restaurant bars and cafes.

Explore Athens

Besides walking, the metro is the perfect way to explore Athens and is even adorned with archeological finds discovered during its construction. Head to the parliament building or the Acropolis Museum, one of the highlights of Athens. At the foot of the Acropolis is the Dionysus Theater, the oldest theater in Europe. If you want to visit some extra ruins, choose the Temple of Zeus and Hadrian’s Gate.

Departure from Athens

After breakfast, you will continue your journey. Athens has many wonders laying not too far down the road. You can head to the excavations of Delphi, an important part of Greek history, about 3.5 hours drive from Athens. Alternatively, head to Evia to really meet the locals, or jump on a boat and island hop from the versatile Naxos all the way to the lesser-known Andros.

Athens – Ride & bite tour

Today you will get to know authentic Greek cuisine on your bike tour with an Athens native. In three hours, you’ll cycle past their favourite places away from the crowds. Pedal through narrow streets and past small traditional restaurants to taste the typical Greek mezzes: small, hot and cold dishes. Along the way, you’ll stop at an artisan bakery and the local market to try the delicacies in the open air. With a bit of luck, the sun will be shining while you enjoy delicious treats, like sweet baklava. After your bike ride, you’ll no longer need to eat and you can enjoy yourself on one of the terraces on the Plaka or at your hotel.
