Arequipa - Coporaque
Leaving Arequipa you’ll wind your way into the mountains. En route, you’ll pass through the Pampa Cañahuas Nature Reserve, where you’ll see llama grazing against a snow-peaked backdrop. At around lunchtime you’ll arrive in the small village of Coporaque. There are far fewer tourists here than in nearby Chivay. After lunch you’ll head out for a hike through the undulating landscapes of the surrounding countryside.
Cruz del Condor
This morning you’ll set off for a hike by the Cruz del Condor. Plunging a dizzying 3200m, it’s the deepest point in the Colca Canyon. The area is home to hundreds of condors, who glide on the thermals rising through the canyon every morning. Sit quietly and watch as they swoop just over your head. After the viewpoint, you’ll continue to the small town of Yanque.
Tucked away between the mountains, you’ll find a beautiful colonial church. You’ll stop for lunch in Chivay and have a wander through town with your guide. Then it’s back to Coporaque where you’ll transfer you luggage to the home of Josefina and Oswaldo; your new home for night. You’ll have a private room with a shared bathroom. It may be simple, but warm welcomes are aplenty. For dinner, you can decide with your guide and the rest of the group where you’d like to eat.
Lend a Hand & Departure
Today you’ll rise bright and early for breakfast with the family. We recommend taking a Spanish phrase book with you as Josefina and Oswaldo don’t speak any English. Once you’ve had your fill you’ll lend a hand on the farm with whatever needs doing that day. It might be milking the cows, feeding the horses or sorting through the corn harvest. After an hour or two it’s time to wave goodbye and you’ll journey back to Arequipa or onwards to Puno.
