1. Inca Trail
Navigating the famous Inca Trail to Machu Picchu through the misty Peruvian mountains is a truly breathtaking and unmissable experience. Make sure you get in early – there is a limited number of permits for people to experience this incredible trek!
2. Rainbow Mountains
Located a few hours outside of Cusco, Rainbow Mountains really is a sight to see and so worth the day trek to reach its summit. Don’t miss out on this exceptional vista of natural rainbow colours in the mountainous bedrock of the Andes. You’ll feel like you’re in a surrealist painting!
3. Learn to cook the Peruvian way in Arequipa
The picturesque town of Arequipa, between Lima and Cusco will have you cooking up a Peruvian feast and lapping up the local culture. We highly recommend you schedule a stop here and try your hand at cooking the tasty, local food before heading on to Lake Titicaca.
4. Colca Canyon
Twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the US, this phenomenal river canyon is spectacular to see with your own eyes and really is one of Peru’s underrated highlights. Stay with a welcoming family on their farm homestay and marvel at the natural beauty of your surroundings. Plus, you’re guaranteed to see majestic condors soaring high above.
5. Lake Titicaca
Prepare to have your jaw dropped and be overwhelmed by Lake Titicaca!
Said to be the birthplace of the Inca people, this infamous crystal clear blue lake sits at 3,800 metres above sea level and is the highest navigable body of water in the world. Explore the lake and discover its many hidden, floating islands. There’s even the opportunity to stay on these islands with locals.
6. Huacachina desert oasis
This totally unique desert oasis will blow you away!
Nestling in the towering sand dunes of Huacachina is a picture-perfect town surrounded by a natural body of water and lined with palm trees. Take a leisurely pedalo around the lake and lap up the sunshine or, if you’re more adrenaline fuelled, go sandboarding on the dunes! Either way, Huacachina makes for a perfect stopover before going South!
7. The Ballestas Islands
Known as the ‘Mini Galapagos’, the Ballestas Islands will be a definite highlight of your Peru trip. Actually, if you enjoy wildlife and bird watching, this is an opportunity you absolutely must not miss out on! Skip along the water in a speedboat, then wait patiently as the mist clears to reveal a rugged coastline littered with hundreds of sea lions in their natural habitat.
You’ll also spot penguins, pelicans and an array of other species!
8. Amazon Rainforest
Did you know that over 20% of the world’s oxygen is produced in the Amazon? It’s no wonder that it’s known as the ‘Lungs of the Earth’. Immerse yourself in the lush depths of the rainforest, spotting some of the staggering number of 40,000 plant species, 3000 types of fish, 1300 bird species, 2.5 million types of insect and 430 individual mammal species! 9. Night buses! (No, we aren’t joking!)
In Peru, the bus network is more advanced than that of the UK and you can find yourself reclining in comfort with refreshments on hand. Whilst they travel to tight schedules, shared public transport also offers the benefit of lowering your carbon footprint.
10. Train to Machu Picchu
Get incredible views of the famous Sacred Valley, and journey towards the iconic mountain top ruins by train, saving you the big trek on foot. It’s a cheaper option than the guided trek and a better alternative for those who don’t feel as able to do the upwards march. Nonetheless, you won’t miss out on marvelling at the wonder of this ancient, historic city!
