Arrival in Death Valley
As you drive towards Death Valley you’ll notice the scenery starts to change from the green valleys of Yosemite or Sequoia National Park to the arid landscape of the desert. The hottest park in the USA, with summer temperatures sometimes reaching 50 degrees and providing dramatic rock formations around every turn!
You’ll be staying in a lodge in the middle of the park, with cosy rooms and a pool for a dip in the sunshine! Snacks and gas are pretty expensive in the park so we recommend you pick some up and fill the tank before you get there. Make a stop at the yellow dunes as you pass through the Mesquite Dunes on your way to your hotel for the night.
Exploring the National Park
You’ll want to get an early start this morning as you’ve got a whole host of exploring to do before driving on to Las Vegas! Zabriskie Point is a good place to start, with breath-taking views across the badlands which have eroded into golden waves. Next up, the Golden Canyon is a must-visit for anyone keen to hike, and Artists Drive lights up in the afternoon light – showcasing the rainbow of colours created by the minerals and volcanic ash.
Onwards to Las Vegas!
Take a visit to Rhyolite Ghost Town, the ruins of a gold-mining town – now used in Hollywood movies before starting your drive to the vibrant and iconic city of Las Vegas. This is about 2.5 hours away, and you’ll pass through more desert landscapes, just like in the movies.
