Rickshaw traveller, Alex decided it was time for a family holiday with a difference, so she booked a Rickshaw trip and ventured off on a jaunt to sunny South Africa with her partner and 12 month old daughter in tow. Read about how she overcame her concerns, where she travelled to and why she’d recommend a Rickshaw family holiday with a twist…
Family travel: Overcoming “the fear”…
“When we told friends and family that we were going to South Africa with our 12 month old daughter we were met with a little disbelief – is it safe, what about disease, is that wise? Hand on heart it was a brilliant decision and we loved every minute of our trip. Much of that was in part to the amazing job Rickshaw Travel did in making sure all the small details were taken care of. We used Rickshaw for our honeymoon to Indonesia 6 years ago and had a superb time and this time they delivered to the same high standard.
Time out in Franshoek
We started out in Cape Town for 3 days, having booked somewhere ourselves as we wanted a kitchen and living space for our daughter to play. I fell in love with Cape Town as soon as I walked out of the airport. It is stunningly beautiful, with great food, lots to see and do and bucket loads of friendly people. From there we went on to Franshhoek which looked like a scene in a movie. We stayed in a lovely guest house all set up for our baby and even the wine tour the next day, the guide brought toys for her to play with. As it was a private tour we were able to take it all in at our own pace and around the naps of our daughter.
A family-friendly safari
Following that we drove along the garden route ending with a safari in Kenton on Sea. My daughter LOVED the safari – bouncing around on an open top truck with the wind in her face, being able to see so many animals. One day my husband wasn’t well so I went on my own with her and the guide. The camp had a play area with toys for children of all ages and the also had a high chair and lovely crib for her.
We’ll be back!
My husband and I were not sure whether a safari would be a holiday we would enjoy so this was a taster really for us. I can say that we loved it and it is up there with one of our best holidays. It is completely doable and enjoyable with children and we will certainly be going back!
My only advice is to do the trip the opposite way to us – start out in Port Elizabeth and end in Cape Town as you wont want to leave (and that way you can extend your trip!)”
Thank you Alex for sharing your wonderful family trip with us!
