Ever wondered what it’s like to work in ethical travel? Our internship programme gives people an opportunity to experience Rickshaw first-hand; what we do and what makes us different. Meet Pia, who recently completed a three-month internship with us. This is her story…
I wanted something different to what I knew
3 incredible months are almost over… and I don’t want to believe that soon my life will “go back to normal” again.
But let me start from the beginning: In July 2015 I graduated from the Gymnasium in a small town near Stuttgart (yup, I am German) and then decided that going to uni straightaway wasn’t what I wanted to do. Always interested in other cultures, countries and people I soon made the decision to leave Germany for a while to explore something new and face new challenges. At the beginning I wanted something not too far away yet different to what I knew. So first I completed a 3-month-internship in Barcelona followed by this Rickshaw internship in Brighton for another 3 months.
So much more than work
So in January I joined the lovely Rickshaw team and since then, completed various tasks in the Marketing, Product and Finance departments. That way I got an idea of the business and really never got bored. Everyday there was something else to do, and even if there was a monotonous task at times I always left the office happily. Because it wasn’t just the work I came for; there was so much more that enriched my working days at Rickshaw Travel.
Fridays in general were extraordinary! There was the so called “Beer o’clock” at the end of the day, one time we got treated with a manicure, another day we enjoyed “ThaiFriday” (self-explanatory, I guess). A meeting resulted in a fun quiz and around Easter time, we hunted for chocolate eggs in the office!
Another advantage of working with Rickshaw is definitely the free lunch provided every day. You see, there’s a lot about food/snacking going on here (not even mentioning all the delicious cakes for anniversaries, birthdays etc!). So who wouldn’t love an environment like that to be their working place?!
Through my internship at Rickshaw I did not only get to know the UK and especially Brighton better, I also learned a lot more about “exotic” countries and as a result my bucket list has expanded a lot (basically to the size of whole Latin America and many other hidden places on the map).
The concept of Meaningful Travel really appeals to me as well and I am proud to say I was working with a great team with a revolutionising mindset.
I don’t regret my decision of interning at all as in the last months I gained work experience, enjoyed living in another country and just grew as a person. So, to conclude, I can really recommend joining the Rickshaw team for an internship! You will have a great time!
