Hanoi to Lao Cai
Setting off in the early evening, you’ll take the overnight train journey from Hanoi up to Lao Cai, near Sapa. You’ll sleep in a 4-bedded couchette with air-conditioning, where you can stare out into the countryside and nod off to the rhythm of the rails. It’s also a great chance to chat to the locals as you travel along.
Black H’Mong visit
The next morning, you’ll arrive in Lao Cai, where a transfer will take you to Sapa. It’s a seriously scenic drive, with green rice terraces running down the hillsides to the valley floor like giant emerald staircases. After checking into your hotel you’ll set off on a guided hike into the mist-swirled hills. The trail will lead you to a Black H’Mong village, on a route that is often overlooked by most other visitors.
Guided hike to the Red Dzao
Today, you’ll take off on another trek that will get you off the typical Sapa trail. It’s a 10km hike over bamboo bridges and across mountain streams, into the heart of these peaceful hills. Along the way, you’ll stop for a panoramic picnic in the valley and meet the people of the Red Dzao hill tribe, distinguished by their scarlet headscarves.
Bac Ha Market & Overnight Train to Hanoi
Leaving Sapa, you’ll drive to Bac Ha, famous throughout the highlands for its hectic local market. Here, the hill tribe people sell their handicrafts, mingle and haggle for their weekly vegetables. It’s a riot of colour and noise, with the aroma of street food rising from the surrounding stalls. Afterwards, you’ll be transferred back to the train station for the overnight journey back to Hanoi.
