Your day-by-day itinerary
Arrival in Labuan Bajo
Labuan Bajo is a picturesque town on the island of Flores. Originally a small fishing community, it’s maintained a great deal of its ramshackle charm. You’ll stay in a cosy eco-lodge by the sea with a swimming pool. From the upstairs bar and restaurant there’s a fantastic view out to the Komodo islands. Spend your first night here sipping on a cocktail, watching the sun sink slowly behind distant islands.
Komodo & Rinca Islands & Departure
Today you’ll go in search of giant Komodo dragons with a local ranger and guide who knows the islands like the back of his hand. Komodo Dragons are a protected species, so the T-shaped stick he carries is only meant to keep the lizards at a safe distance. The creatures aren’t exactly dangerous but they’re not entirely harmless either; there are millions of bacteria in a Komodo bite – enough to kill a person.
After visiting Komodo, you’ll continue to Rinca. The landscape here is greener and hillier than Komodo, and you can take a 2-hour walk across the island with a local guide with fantastic views across the sea and the island. With a bit of luck, you’ll spot the odd dragon amongst the horses, deer, water buffalo and monkeys. After the tour, you’ll return to Labuan Bajo where you can take advantage of the tempting pool.
The next day you’ll gather your things together and get ready to hit the road again.
Optional day trip
Meaningful Massage & Local Lunch
Since most outbound flights aren’t until later in the afternoon, you can make the most of your day with a relaxing Indonesian massage on the way to the airport. You’ll be visiting a social enterprise – the massage centre trains and employs local people with disabilities, giving them both income and purpose where often this can be a challenging thing to achieve. After your massage, you’ll head for lunch with the assistant manager of the centre, who is visually impaired and speaks a good level of English. His wife is a very good cook, and will prepare a simple, delicious lunch, before you head off to catch your onward flight.
(p.s. If you’d like to learn some of the techniques for yourself, we can also arrange for you to do a training course instead – just ask your Travel Specialist)
