Days 1-2

Battambang - Arrival & Guided tour

Arriving in Battambang, you’ll settle into your comfortable resort with a tempting swimming pool, just outside the city centre. Despite being Cambodia’s second largest city Battambang is still a small town with a rural air. Full of crumbling French colonial architecture, it’s an atmospheric place for a wander, with a lively market and dozens of Khmer restaurants serving tangy local curries.

On Day 2, you’ll take a tour of the area with a local guide to learn more about daily life in Cambodia’s fertile green ‘rice bowl’. First, you’ll set off on a very unusual trip along Battambang’s bamboo railway, perched on a rickety bamboo platform with a chassis and a motor. Then, you’ll visit some small surrounding villages to get an authentic glimpse of the countryside.

The next stop is Wat Ek Phnom, once considered one of the finest Angkor temples. Used as a prison by the Khmer Rouge, it’s a chilling but beautiful spot. Today, the landscape is claiming back the temple, which is overgrown with tumbling plants and grasses. You’ll grab lunch by the river before continuing to the Killing Caves, the scene of many atrocities during Pol Pot’s regime. Finally, you’ll trek up to two hilltop pagodas with panoramic views over the green fields and Karst mountains.

Day 3

Battambang - Thai/Cambodia Border - Trat

Today, you’ll leave Battambang and head for the border with Thailand, a scenic if bumpy journey. After one last look over your shoulder at Cambodia, you’ll cross into Thailand on foot. Once you’ve cleared immigration, you’ll meet your Thai driver on the other side and continue to Trat, where your Thailand adventure awaits.
