Arrival on Lankayan
Starting in Sandakan you’ll be picked up from your hotel or the airport and transferred to the pier where a boat will be waiting to take you to Lankayan Island (around an 1.5 hour trip). As you cross the tropical sea you’ll see a small island appear in the distance. White sandy beaches and azure blue waters surround a tropical forest – truly paradise on earth. The boat will drop anchor at a wooden pier and you’ll feel the sand between your toes as you hop onto land. You’ll stay in a comfortable wooden bungalow overlooking the sea with the beach at your front door. All that’s left for you to do is to grab some snorkelling equipment and explore the colourful world beneath its surface.
Lankayan Island - Free time
Start off the second day of your stay with an invigorating swim after waking up; breakfast will taste even better afterwards. Today you’ll have plenty of time to do your own thing. Why not order a fruit cocktail and finish reading that book you started on the plane. You can pull a beach chair up to the water’s edge so that you can dip your feet in the sea to cool off from time to time. You can also go for a walk around the island if you want, the island is only 2km long, so it won’t take you too long.
Snorkelling or diving in the waters surrounding the island is likely to be a highlight of your trip. You’ll see colourful fish swimming around the coral and occasionally a sea turtle might float by. Lankayan is a breeding ground for sea turtles and Lankayan is home to the local project we support, Reef Guardian. As well as ensuring that the marine life around the east coast of Sabah is protected this organisation also provides 24 hour care for sea turtles, who lay their eggs on the island. You can visit the charity base on your stay here, and may even be lucky enough to witness a nest of baby turtles being released into the sea.
Diving on Lankayan
Select this option if you’re interested in seeing some of the extensive underwater life this tropical paradise has to offer. Lankayan Island has earned it’s reputation as having some of the best dive spots in the world. On every full day spent here the friendly dive staff will take you for 3 guided boat dives in the Sulu Sea (not arrival and departure days). Please remember you’ll need to leave up to 48 hours after diving before you fly.
