Day 1 – Arrive at Koyasan & guided tour
You will arrive into Shin Imamiya Station using your JR Pass and from here, you’ll catch the cable car to Koyasan where your guide will meet you at the station. From here you’ll be shown around Mt Koya’s sights including Kongobunji Temple, and Okunoin, Japan’s largest cemetery. Passing through you’ll see 200,000 tombstones belonging to feudal lords, monks and well known Japanese companies. At the heart of the cemetery is Oku-no-in, the memorial hall for the founder of the sect, Kobo Daishi. Dinner tonight is shojin ryori, a traditional Buddhist cuisine. This vegetarian meal is not only healthy but delicious!
Day 2 – Morning ceremony & departure
Make sure you get an early night though, as it’s an early rise the next morning to witness the captivating fire and prayer ceremony. Performed by monks, this is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience as you embrace the serene atmosphere and are invited to perform o-shoko, an ancient ritual designed to purify the soul. Finally, after breakfast in your room, it’s time to take the cable car back to the train station and continue on to your next destination.
