Leh - Alchi - Temisgang
This morning, you’ll leave Leh and head for the monastery of Alchi, dating back to the 12th century. Only a handful of monasteries from this period of time have survived, due to the fighting in this region that occured during the 14th century. Because of the fine wood carvings and impressive wall paintings that you can still marvel at here today, this monastery was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After your visit to Alchi, you will continue on to the small town of Temisgang. In the afternoon, you can climb up to the gompa, from where you can enjoy an atmospheric and panoramic view.
Temisgang to Lamayuru Monastery
After breakfast this morning, you’ll explore the fertile valley of Temisgang, clusters with apricot and apple orchards. Next, you’ll set off for Lamayuru. Along the way, the views take a turn for the bizarre with a landscape that looks strangely like the moon. After an hour, you’ll reach Lamayuru, scattered amongst dramatic, steep rocks, set against a backdrop of giant peaks.
Mulbekh & Departure
You’ll then continue to the small village of Mulbekh, the cultural boundary between the Buddhist dominated East and the Islamic West. On arrival, you’ll spot the Gompa of Mulbekh, which dominates the valley. Tonight you’ll stay in a camp with well furnished tents and en-suite bathrooms.
The next day you’ll cross the spectacular Zoji La pass into Kashmir. In the afternoon, you’ll reach Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir, where this trip ends.
