bay in south africa

Day 1

Arrival in Hermanus

When you reach the former fishing village of Hermanus, you’ll settle into your cosy guesthouse just outside the centre. The rest of the afternoon is free; head to one of the panoramic lookout points or sit back in a local cafe and soak up the sea view. From July to early December Hermanus is one of the best places in the world to watch whales from the land; they come surprisingly close to shore!

Day 2

Hermanus - De Hoop Nature Reserve

Today, you’ll head to a stud farm just outside Hermanus ready for your horse ride along the sand dunes. The route is gentle and the horses are good-natured, so there’s no need to be nervous. Your guide will lead you through the fynbos fields towards the sea, where the bush will give way to bright white sand dunes. Soon you’ll have the wind in your hair and the thud of the hooves beneath you.

Afterwards, you’ll continue driving through the Overberg region towards De Hoop Nature Reserve. Along the way you can stop at Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of the African continent. In the afternoon, you’ll arrive at the Nature Reserve, packed with diverse landscapes, rugged coastlines, sand dunes, rock formations and animals. You’ll stay in a tastefully decorated cottage, with your very own braai (South African barbeque) ready for an al fresco feast.

Days 3-4

De Hoop Nature Reserve - Free Time

The De Hoop Nature Reserve is still largely undiscovered by tourists, making it a wonderful place to enjoy the unspoilt coastline. The best thing to do here is simply to wander along the shore and scramble to the viewpoints for some staggering panoramas. You could also rent a mountain bike and cycle through the Fynbos in search of bontebok.

The following day you’ll pack up your things and journey onwards.
