Marrakesh - Aït Benhaddou

Day 1

Marrakesh - Aït Benhaddou

This morning your hire car will be dropped off. Driving in Morocco is a breeze; the roads are well maintained, well signposted and you can take it at your own pace. The scenery is stunning, passing valleys and Atlas mountains. Shortly after the exit for Aït Benhaddou, you’ll drive across a barren lunar landscape and the imposing kasbah Aït Benhaddou will loom up like a mirage, fringed by lush palm trees and a shallow river.

A kasbah is a kind of citadel, made up of high-walled buildings of clay. Historically, the kasbahs gave shelter to entire village communities, though these days many of them are no longer inhabited. You’ll check into your kasbah-style hotel in Aït Benhaddou, the first stop on this trip. This small oasis has a couple of tastefully decorated rooms, a lovely pool and a terrace overlooking the kasbah where they serve wonderful food in the evenings. In the afternoon head to the kasbah and enter a medieval world with a warren of narrow lanes.

Day 2

Aït Benhaddou - Ouarzazate - Dades Valley

After breakfast, you’ll set off again and drive through the fertile valley to Ouarzazate (1 hour). If you thought the road from Marrakesh was beautiful, wait until you see this. Bizarre rock formations, bright green palm valleys and rugged mountain peaks await you. You’ll stay in a small mountain hotel, the perfect base for your walk through the valley this afternoon. All you need is a decent level of fitness and a sturdy pair of shoes.
