Day 1 – Olá Azores!
Island hopping through the Azores typically starts on the largest island – São Miguel, and in the largest city of the islands – Ponta Delgada. The historic centre features 16th century architecture, cobbled streets and white-washed buildings. From here you can easily explore the west of São Miguel with your own rental car. Once you have settled into your centrally located hotel, take a stroll. Look for maritime icons of the islands’ seafaring history on facades in the city. There are plenty of places to eat within walking distance of your accommodation.
Day 2 – Half day dolphin and whale watching
The seas around the Azores are home to various species of dolphins and whales, as well as an abundance of marine life. So, in the morning head out on a whale and dolphin watching tour. Walk to the harbour to board the boat that will take you along the coast of São Miguel. Onboard, the marine biologist guide will explain everything about the marine life around the Azores. The sperm whale lives in these waters year round and if you’re lucky you may even see the largest animal in the world: the blue whale!
Your afternoon is free to explore the west of São Miguel. We would recommend driving to Sete Cidades – around 40 minutes away. The town is surrounded by crater lakes, which you can walk or cycle around, or kayak across the waters. Let us know and we can include this in your itinerary. For one of the most beautiful views of the Azores be sure to stop at Miradouro da Vista do Rei.
Day 3 – Explore the east or island hop
After three days in Ponta Delgada we guarantee you’ll want to spend more time exploring these incredible islands. There’s plenty more to see on the island of São Miguel. Why not head east to Furnas – a region known for its volcanic activities. Or jump on a short flight and discover Pico, Faial or Terceira.
