Wake Up and Smell the Coffee!
Bite-sized tripDay 1 – Arrival in Matagalpa
Matagalpa is famous for its coffee production, but you might not know that there is a large indigenous Indian community in the region resulting in a multitude of interesting handicrafts and lively music. Nestled in a green valley between mountain peaks, the area is ideal for hikes and treks. You’ll stay in a mountain view hotel in the Cerro Arenal Nature Reserve.
Days 2-3 – Coffee tour & departure
Today is all about coffee, so why not grab a cup at breakfast this morning? It’s almost certainly from the region. After a leisurely breakfast you’ll head out to the coffee plantations to begin this Nicaragua coffee tour. You’ll learn about the whole coffee making process from bean to cup and your guide will explain everything, from harvesting, washing, drying, roasting and grinding of the beans.
The tour ends in the early afternoon with a cup of coffee where the guide will answer any remaining questions. This tour only runs during the zafra, when the coffee can be harvested, between November and March. If you’d like to travel to Matagalpa outside these months, we can leave today free for you to explore under your own steam, or arrange a trek to the nearby indigenous Indian communities.
The next day it’s time to say goodbye to the coffee fields and prepare for your next adventure.
