Arrival in Hemis Shukpachen
Today, you’ll make an early start and travel from Leh to the village of Yangtang, where you’ll continue on foot. You’ll be walking in the crisp mountain sun, but when the sun disappears behind the mountains it really gets chilly very quickly, so keep something warm handy at all times. You’ll hike for around four hours, passing tiny villages where donkeys wander free and children play in the streets Over the course of the day, you’ll see the landscape change from murmuring streams and fields of barley into barren, rugged mountains, where the narrow path at the end rises steeply. When you arrive in Yangtang, a car will be waiting for you and you’ll continue to your host family in Hemis Shukpachen.
Hemis Shukpachen - Tingmosgang
This morning, you can find a sunny spot, stick your sweater under your head and bask in the mountain scenery before your hike begins. You’ll walk through a lush green valley full of apricot and apple trees, scattered with fast-flowing streams and waterfalls. You’ll soon arrive in Tingmosgang, with a stunning genuine monastery perched on the mountainside above the village. In the afternoon, you are free to explore independently or snooze in the sun. Tonight you’ll stay in a simple but authentic Himalayan guesthouse, where you’ll be treated to a hearty local meal.
Tingmosgang - Khalse - Lamayuru - Alchi
Today, you’ll cover some real ground, crossing the longer distances by car. After breakfast, you’ll wave goodbye to your host family and begin your last hike. Your route passes the remote village of Tian and continues through golden barley fields. Gradually, you’ll start climbing up to a vast plateau with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains. Finally, you’ll descend to meet the main road and a car will be waiting to take you to Lamayuru, where erosion has created some spectacular rock formations in the white mountains. Right in the centre of this area, on some rather wobbly, steep rocks stands one of the most famous and most spectacular monasteries in Ladakh. You’ll then drive on to your guesthouse in Alchi, where your host family go out of their way to make you feel at home.
Alchi Monastery visit & Departure
Today is reserved for rest and relaxation. There are no long hikes or car journeys and in the morning, you’ll visit the Alchi Monastery, with exquisitely carved wood decorations, gigantic statues and imaginative murals in traditional Kashmiri style. In the afternoon, you’ll drive back to Leh and the rest of the day is free for you to do as you wish. You’ll spend the night in a cosy guesthouse.
The next day your trip comes to an end and you’ll continue to your next destination.
